Friday 5

By October 12, 2018October 19th, 2018Friday Five
Greetings! It’s time for the Friday 5. Have a great weekend!
Neurochemistry of Music
Need a refresher on some of the neurochemical responses to music? I did. Check out Mona Lisa Chanda and Daniel Levitin’s (author of This Is Your Brain On Music) review of the many neurochemical changes noted from a plethora of studies.
Music, Explained
I stumbled upon this Netflix episode and it’s really an enjoyable, informative exploration of music across cultures and even species. Turns out human abilities to connect the many elements within music (rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, etc.) is really special. One of the speakers is Dr. Aniruddh Patel, whose work has been celebrated by the American Music Therapy Association and the Center for Music and Neurologic Function.
Search “Explained” in Netflix and find the episode titled “Music” in season one or click HERE. It’s only 18 minutes!
Resource
I mentioned this a few months ago, but a reminder that I recently updated the Music Therapy Source School Guide. If you know anyone considering a degree in music therapy but who wants to compare schools and get some tips on how to approach it, this has helped a lot of soon-to-be music therapists in their search and decision making.
Happiness Hacks
The neurochemical effects of music are profound, as demonstrated in the first recommendation today. But there are other ways to get endorphin boosts. These are for those times when you are musicked out 🙂 I’m a fan of any article that promotes dark chocolate.
Karaoke
This was a dense issue of the Friday 5, so let’s end on a light one. This has got to be one of the most awkward karaoke selections…and I might have to try it 😜
I love hearing from you. If you really liked (or disliked) any of the recs today, reply to this email and let me know!
Matt
Music Therapy Source runs on love. But there are some costs. If you love the Friday 5 and are into helping to keep it going, consider pledging $2/month to keep the lights on…or servers running…or whatever makes sense for a website 😉
