Hi team!
Thanks for checking out another edition of the Friday 5! Why do I say “hi team”? Because I know that the readers of this newsletter are collectively working to build skills and find tools to improve themselves, thus improving their impact on the world. It’s why I take this very seriously!
Here is the Friday 5:
Conference
Speaking of improving, the AMTA conference is in a couple months, and early bird registration ends August 6. Save money and get registered! Will I see you in Dallas?
Sessions at Conference
There are so many good reasons to go. I haven’t seen the full list of sessions yet, but I can tell you the two sessions I’m presenting.
-
Clinical Guitar Workshop: A Song-learning Process for the Modern Music Therapist (with Evan Reiss)
-
A Growing Impact: Innovative Interventions for Short-term and Long-term Pediatric Palliative Care (with my colleagues, Brianna Negrete, Jenny Goldhammer, and Efrat Lelkes)
Guitar Tip
Don’t just memorize chord shapes – understand which notes you are playing in terms of their scale degree. That is, identify on which strings you are playing roots, thirds, fifths, and any extensions. Understand how manipulating the third changes the chord quality (e.g. major to minor) or play with major and dominant 7ths. More tips in the Guitar Club.
What I’m Listening To
My band played the Underground Music Showcase (UMS) in Denver this last weekend and I got to hear a bunch of amazing bands. It seems there is a bit of a rock and roll revival going on, which is pretty exciting. One of the shows I dug most was from Denver band Space In Time. Sounds like: organ-infused 1970’s hard psychedelic rock with Heart-like female lead vocals. If that’s your thing, check it out.
