Friday 5

By June 15, 2018Friday Five
Happiest of Fridays to you 🙂 Here are 5 things I’m digging in this edition of the Friday 5. Remember that you can check out past editions at Music Therapy Source.
What I’m Reading
When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing by Daniel H. Pink. This book is about maximizing short- and long-term time cycles (e.g. a day, or a lifetime). Music therapists and musicians will appreciate his extensive focus on the benefits of group singing in Chapter 6.
What I’m Listening To
It’s nearly Summer and I’m in California. Naturally, Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys is on as I type this. (Spotify link)
Quote
“In entrainment, the voices are not locked in exactly; they are always slightly off from each other, finding each other again and again in micromoments of time, weaving in and out of each other’s rhythms. Perfect harmony can be ecstasy or an utter bore. It is the push and pull that makes it exciting.” Stephen Nachmanovitch in Free Play (yes, I’m still talking about this book).
Music Therapy Source runs on love. You can be a rockstar by donating $5/month to help cover costs and keep the Friday 5 alive!
Your Brain On Improv
Charles Limb, who is a colleague of mine at UCSF, gave this fascinating TED Talk several years ago about how the brain works during musical improvisation.
Throwback
Taking care of vocal health is important. Here’s a throwback to a Friday 5 from several months ago, which was all about taking care of your sing box.
Tootles,
Matt
