Friday 5! Stars and stripes, rap and improv

By June 29, 2017Friday Five

Happy Friday!

It’s strange to think that the 4th of July is almost upon us. We hope you all get the chance to enjoy a parade, see some fireworks, or at the very least, eat some good food and spend time with family and friends. We kick off this week’s Friday 5 with some holiday spirit:

Song
Stars and Stripes Forever
Great for movement and playing with dynamics.

Educational Video
Rap Lyrics
A fascinating analysis of how rap lyrics are structured. Note that this video includes foul language and themes typically not appropriate for clients; we suggest you watch it on your own.

Group Intervention Idea
Communication Improvisation
Possible goals: Improve nonverbal communication skills, increase social awareness, increase focus of attention
Write out directions for instrument play on pieces of paper. For example: Plays loudly, plays softly, only plays when given eye contact, constantly changes instruments, etc. Have each client pick one and keep it a secret. Instruct clients that after the improv they will get to try to guess who had what direction. After the improv and guessing, discuss the impact the different parts had on people. What was it like when one person was constantly changing instruments, playing loudly, etc? How is that like conversations in real life?
Modifications: Provide a list of possible directions when clients are try to guess.

Quote
“America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.” – Harry S. Truman
